"I have thoroughly enjoyed the Brick North series and Augustine Meijer’s ability to place the reader right in the middle of the action. His books are hard to put down; I find myself anxiously awaiting the arrival of my next escape to LaSalle Harbor!"
The true gift of Christmas is witnessed in how we treat each other with respect, friendship, and love on December 25th.
May those ideals be carried out every day as we work together to make the world a better place for all God's children.
The World of Brick North
It's 1957. North lives and works in a mid-sized city that lies on the border of the fruit and rust belts in Southwest Michigan. LaSalle Harbor is a manufacturing city that relies heavily upon the tourists who seek out the white sandy shores and moderate climate of the Lake Michigan coast. Like most small and mid-sized towns, there's graft and corruption among many of those who desire the world to see them as upstanding citizens, as well as crime among the poor and outcast. North stands against corruption and for those who have no voice.
Brick, a contraction of his seldom-used first name, Brian, and his middle name, Richard or Rick, is tenacious and honest. As the lead detective of the LaSalle Harbor PD, he has come to learn that others are far more cavalier in their approach to honesty than he is.
Just a dozen years after the end of the fighting, North carries the scars and nightmares of World War II. Like other Vets of that era, those nightmares are borne in silence. Throughout the series, we see more and more of the memories that trouble him and his slow realization of his problems.
In the time before cellphones, DNA testing, and modern forensic science, there was Brick North.
Augustine (Gus) Meijer was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in the late 1950s. To say that he's led an eclectic life would be an understatement. Over the years, he has worked for a funeral home, studied and was employed as a gemologist, was the vice president of a national retail firm, became an ordained minister, and served as a hospital chaplain. Meijer is known for both a gentle heart and a sarcastic wit. After having lived and worked throughout the United States, he and his wife settled in the desert Southwest. Most recently, he served as Head Chaplain for the 1,000-member Albuquerque police department.
